“Since reading ‘The Miracle of Castel di Sandro’, I have had a deep passion for the rural regions of Italy, and here Abruzzo shines.

It was a warm spring evening at the Stadio Adriatico in Pescara, and the streets of this city on Italy’s eastern Adriatic coast were buzzing.

I remember from years back Pescara having spells in Serie A, with several Danish internationals over the years pulling the Biancazzuri shirt over their heads.

The Stadio Adriatico is a classic oval stadium with a running track. It dates back to the 1950’s and is beautifully located in the town center. Running tracks and football - tend not to be a good combination for viewing the game. However- and this might sound weird- I like the imperfect in stadiums and arenas, and Italy offers a lot on this account.

I arrived at the stadium with my family slightly late, kickoff was only a few minutes away. But from the amount of tifosi outside on the curbs, I could immediately sense something was going on. Once inside the ground, following a half Italian, half English conversation with a gentleman, we were advised to support the protests and not take any of the vacant seats at the curva.

The absence of the ultras was due to a protest being held against President Daniele Sebastian’s poor running of the club.

At half time, the Curva started to fill up with the Ultras. And in this section, there were such a variety. Families, children, couples and friends hanging out in the April night.

For many years my family has learnt to live with my passion. Most adventures I share with them, but sudden “improvised” detours happen and we often find ourselves in an interesting location.”
