FCS-ID: 019/AGM20225—52MEXICO CITY, Mexico — Tijuana based Football Case Study Member Alejandro Gutiérrez Mora visits Mexico City to uncover a city that is the beating heart of Mexican football.
“For me, CDMX is a jungle, it moves at a high speed and I think it has a chaotic energy like any big city in the world, everything happens at the same time and everywhere, and I think it is precisely that energy that attracts people from other parts of Mexico or the world to it.”
Home to giants like America, PUMAS and Cruz Azul- clubs with huge history- Chilangos are proud of their teams and work hard to to keep their traditions alive. Hailing from Tijuana, a city with a relatively young club and a growing footballing tradition, Alejandro enjoyed throwing himself into a community that lives and breathes the game. On his way to Ciudad Universitaria for PUMAS’ game against Mazatlán, Alejandro struck up a conversation with his Uber driver who explained how he and many others like him have links to PUMAS that stretch back generations.
“He told me on the way to the stadium that his family has always been close to the PUMAS UNAM club, his grandfather worked there, and then his father, it was a family tradition to attend all the Sunday midday games. As a guy from Tijuana, it has been special for me to be able to observe just a little of what I saw on television as a child and to be able to observe the tradition of the university oath in person.”
Having also paid a visit to Where is Football’s community pop-up during CDMX Art Week, Alejandro got a taste of game not just on- pitch but on-street too.
“I think that one always has in mind the immensity that Mexico City represents, however it never ceases to surprise when you see it with your own eyes.”
