In May 2023, Football Case Study was commissioned by Leagues Cup and Major League Soccer to document the inaugural Leagues Cup—a nationwide, World Cup-style tournament. Held between July 21 and August 19, 2023, the tournament featured 77 matches across the United States and Canada. Organized by MLS and Liga MX, and sanctioned by CONCACAF, the event marked a pivotal moment in North American football culture.
Football Case Study’s photographers covered over 32 matches, capturing not only the on-field action but also the rich, complex football culture that emerged. Blending American and Mexican influences, the tournament showcased football's growing popularity in the United States, highlighting the unique cultural convergence and its significance in the evolution of the sport.
