During my graduation, I explored the tension between natural chaos and the human desire to impose control—a theme that extends beyond landscapes to the realm of football. In the Netherlands, we have designed our landscape down to the last detail, an attempt to tame nature and keep it within boundaries. This same instinct is evident in football culture, where the primal energy of the crowd meets efforts to maintain order. Away ends are fenced off, travel restrictions are commonplace, and even the smallest gatherings of supporters often cause anxiety among the authorities.
Yet, football's culture is filled with complexities that I find both captivating and inspiring. There is a profound sense of community, a shared identity that football has come to represent—almost taking on the role of a modern-day religion in place of churches. But at its core, what continues to amaze me is our behavior in the stands: the unbridled joy, the shouting, the sheer emotion. It’s a collective expression of passion for a few individuals who excel at what is, in essence, their day job. There is something deeply human in that ritual, something that resonates far beyond the pitch.
