PHOTOGRAPHER: SCOTT GROULT LOCATION: ILHA DE SANTO ANTOA, CABO VERDE DATE: JUNE 2023 FCS-ID: 006/SG20623—238For decades, mass tourism has shaped our society, often overshadowing places where the industry has yet to take hold. That’s why I seek out destinations that remain largely untouched, places where the local culture thrives on its own terms. Over the past few years, my travels have taken me to various countries as part of a new project: uncovering football pitches around the world. It began in the Faroe Islands, where I was struck by the abundance of pitches scattered across the rugged landscape, despite the small population. That discovery sparked a deep obsession, leading me to spend countless hours on Google Maps, tracking down stadiums in remote corners of the globe.
My most recent exploration brought me to Cabo Verde, an Atlantic archipelago of ten islands. Here, football is more than just a sport—it is a way of life. During the warm days of June, as the sun dips below the horizon around 5 PM, football pitches come alive with players of all ages. These fields hold profound significance in the villages, acting as central gathering places for children, parents, and grandparents alike. I was grateful for the chance to capture the scenes that unfolded there, where the beauty of the pitches mirrors the spirit of the communities that play on them.
In Cabo Verde, football is everywhere and for everyone
