Football's global epicenter revolves around Europe, with its commercial power and abundant resources shaping the sport's landscape. Yet, the African influence is undeniable, as countless players from the continent make their mark in Europe’s top leagues. Despite this, stories about African football often revolve around narratives of poverty, overlooking the rich diversity and passion that define the game on the continent.
In January, I traveled to Ivory Coast to experience African football firsthand at the 2023 African Cup of Nations. I wanted to share a different perspective with my audience—many of whom hold preconceived notions about the continent. Over seven days, I attended three matches in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro, immersing myself in the local football culture. Seven days was far from enough, and I left with a longing to return, my stay cut short by the need for malaria pills.
What struck me most was the unwavering support and national pride. Fans embodied a beautiful diversity, with tribal identities and cultural differences on display, yet united by a shared love for the game. My time in Ivory Coast wasn’t just about documenting matches; it was about challenging perceptions and revealing a different side of African football—one where passion, pride, and cultural vibrancy drive the game forward.
